Ministry of Education has hailed Centre for Social Concern (CfSC) for opening a library in Area 25 in Lilongwe expected to serve at least 4 700 people in the township.

Speaking during the opening ceremony on Wednesday, the ministry’s director for teacher education and development Mischeck Yagontha Munthali said the library, which is named after the late Bishop Patrick Augustine Kalilombe, who served in the Lilongwe Diocese of the Catholic Church between 1972 and 1979, will groom critical thinkers.

He said: “The library will play a critical role in building a cadre of critical thinkers. Libraries are a great place to create such people.

“Whoever touches a book on whatever subject, gets ideas and information that can transform them.”

The centre’s director, Father James Ngahy said the library is useful for people doing research.

He said: “The late Kalilombe was a great theologian who left us the legacy of his books. We have organised them and let them to be useful for many people doing research.

“We know that education is power; if we empower our children and ourselves, we will empower our own country as well. Without education, the country cannot develop.

One of the users of the library, Mphatso Gausi, said the facility is promoting a reading culture among people living around the area.

CfSC also launched its 2021 annual report for the first time since its establishment in 2002.
